Wilbur likes the woods. Fewer people means he isn't stared at as much, and he's found that he likes hunting.

Plus he can stretch out in the woods. Being nine feet tall makes that difficult, inside.

On one hand, Wilbur could be described as a clever, dangerous, insane, Lovecraftian entity. This is true. On the other hand, he could be described as simply being a confused kid in dire need of friends. This is true.
